Cozumel barrier reef

The Cozumel reef is one area within the larger Mesoamerican Reef, which is the second most expansive reef system in the world. Beginning north of Yucatan and covering the entirety of the southeast portion of Mexico, the Mesoamerican or “Great Mayan Reef” is a truly unique ecosystem full of countless species, colours and sights to see.

The Cozumel reef extends along the length of the island and our visitors can easily access many incredible dive spots by boat. When you explore any of the areas of the reef listed below, you will have the opportunity to come face to face with more than 500 different species of fish and nearly 70 types of coral. Additionally, you will be wowed by the turtles, rays, sharks and more.

Where is Palancar Reef in Cozumel Mexico?

Located near the southwest side of the island of Cozumel, Palancar Reef spans 3.5 miles in length and anywhere from 50 to 115 feet deep. Due to the water’s fantastic clarity, you can see for up to 200 feet and there is definitely a lot to take in. Palancar Reef blends various types of coral, creating spectacular splashes of colour and the perfect spot for eagle rays, turtles and impressive schools of fish to congregate.

Like the Cozumel reef, Palancar is part of the Great Barrier Reef of the Western Atlantic. Well-suited to the interests and abilities of beginner swimmers and expert divers alike, Palancar Reef is everything you would hope an underwater paradise to be. From natural rock formations through to an extraordinary array of vegetation, you can explore the Palancar Gardens, Caves, Bricks and Horseshoe all at different depths of your dive.

What is snorkeling like in El Cielo?

El Cielo is an extremely shallow yet stunningly beautiful area for snorkeling. Absolutely ideal for beginner snorkelers and families, the water you’ll find here is only about three to four feet deep. The water boasts an out-of-this-world clarity and the white sand creates a remarkable contrast with the colourful fish and plentiful starfish you’ll find here.

El Cielo, which means heaven in Spanish, is located close to the shores of Cozumel, but you will still need a boat to access this fantastic swimming area. Regarded as one of the most enticing areas in the Caribbean, El Cielo is a must see for tourists who have an interest in seeing the very best the sea has to offer.
