Is it Safe to Swim in Cenotes?

Cancun Adventures is excited to show you how to safely enjoy the refreshing beauty of our local cenotes.

As part of our promise to our clients, we ensure all the tours we offer prioritize safety – above all else – so you can trust that a guided cenote experience will be as unforgettable as it is secure.

Cenote means sacred well – a place for worshipping natural wonders and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Mayan landscape. The chance to swim and snorkel in Cenotes brings tourists, from around the world, to the caves within and surrounding Cancun and Tulum. However, as all smart tourists do, sometimes our clients have questions about the safety of swimming in these nature-made wells.

Are cenotes safe for swimming?

Are Cenotes Safe for Swimming?

When talking about diving into any body of water, there are several things to consider in terms of safety: is the water clean and what dangers such as an undertow or critters may be lurking beneath the water? To protect the best interests of our Cancun Adventure’s guests, we stick to the cenotes our tour guides know through and through. This ensures there are no surprises and enhances the overall experience for all those involved.

In Mexico, cenotes are not only well-loved, but they are revered, which means we protect them against the potentially unwanted consequences of them being tourist hot spots. We guard these natural wells against pollution and ensure all visitors act respectfully while visiting, which limits any risk of pollution and maintains the purity of the cenote for all those who wish to enjoy them. As for animals and insects, you are more likely to encounter them while hiking through the ruins than you are in the water. This is especially true because, when you join us on a Cancun Adventures tour, you will have company. There is nothing creatures hate more than the splish-splashing of several people, so you can feel assured you will be the scariest thing in the cenotes.

Remember: unlike the ocean where there can be big waves or a strong undertow, cenotes are closed off – within caves – that protect the calm, azure waters from the elements. This typically makes them an ideal spot for a restful swimming experience. Of course, you need to be cognizant of the rocks to ensure you are entering and exiting the cenote safely.

The more you know about cenotes, the safer they are

We would never recommend that you go exploring the Mayan ruins or cenotes on your own. Without the knowledge of an expert tour guide, you run the risk of getting lost and of betraying the best health, safety and environmental practices for your surroundings.

When you sign up for one of our cenotes tours, you will have the opportunity to explore cenotes throughout Tulum – depending on your preference.

Join our Tulum, Cenote & Snorkeling Tour, marvel yourself by walking through the crumbling architecture of the ruins of Tulum, continue to a fresh-water Mayan cenote and enjoy its’ magical atmosphere and finish your journey on one of the most beautiful snorkel trips at the gorgeous Yal Ku where saltwater meets fresh-water.

If you’re more into a full wet & fun experience, jump in our Cenotes & Snorkeling Tour and float along on a guided tour in the brisk waters of a unique Mayan Cenote. Then, navigate through breathtaking caves and caverns surrounded by the history of stalactites and stalagmites. Finally, snorkel through an incredible lagoon brimming with aquatic life in the famous Yal-kú Lagoon in Playa del Carmen.

Book our Cenotes, Turtles & Beach Club Tour to explore the underground natural pools with crystal-clear waters of one of the region’s most magnificent Mayan cenotes. Continue at the picturesque beach community of Akumal, where wild sea turtles make their home as well as a huge variety of tropical fish and colorful coral.

We choose these cenotes because we are familiar with them. These cenotes are popular, frequently regulated attractions that, for years, have been deemed safe for swimming. Best of all, we always provide life jackets and snorkeling equipment, so we can mitigate any safety risks as much as possible.

Where there is adventure, it is best to be prepared and fully understand your abilities and risks

After years of treating visitors to the unbelievable beauty of our cenotes, we are confident it is worth the trek it takes to uncover each of these natural wells. As with any physical activity, there are risks of injury and we do not recommend these tours for anyone with limited mobility.

To learn more about our cenote tours, reach out and allow our expert tour guides to tell you all about your options for exploring the Mayan Riviera, Cancun and Tulum. We look forward to sharing with you all about how cenotes earned their reputation as the perfect spot to worship gods. Once you see them for yourself, you’ll believe it too!
