December 30 - January 8 BPM (Beats Per Minute) Festival

The Beats Per Minute (BPM) Festival is an annual electronic music beach festival in Playa del Carmen.  Bringing in the world's top DJs, it takes place each year in early January. What started out as a conference for the music business has become one of the world's biggest parties.

January 1 - New Year's Day/Dia De Año Nuevo

A holiday around the globe, celebrations in Cancun and Riviera May vary, from American Football, to parties, to laying on the beach recovering from the night before.  Cancun and the Mayan Riviera is the perfect place to greet the new year.

January 6 - Dia de los Reyes (Day of the Kings) 

This uniquely Mexican event celebrates the Three Kings who visited Jesus.  All over Cancun and Playa del Carmen you will see "Rosca de Reyes," a type of bread, for sale.  Hidden in the bread are little babies figurines, and the person who discovers the baby must throw a party the following month on Candlemans Day.

Late January - Annual Handline Barracuda Tournament

This Barracuda Bash held on the island of Isla Mujeras just off the coast of Cancun is a renowned fishing event that raises money for needy, local charities.  It is a great way to have fun and help the Cancun and Isla Mujeras communities. 



February 2- Candlemas Day/Día de la Candelaria

The day celebrated the midway date between the winter and spring solstices.  In the USA and Canada it is celebrated as Groundhog Day in a fun way, yet in Mexico and the Cancun area, it is a religious celebration spent with family.

February 5 - Constitution Day 

On this day Mexico celebrates the signing of their constitution in 1917.  Mexico's constitution set a model for social rights that was followed by other government's constitutions around the world.

February 14 - Valentine's Day/Día de San Valentí­n

Love is love all over the world.  Like many other countries, Mexico celebrates Saint Valentine's Day to express love and appreciation for all loved ones - friends and family.  And for travelers, Cancun and the Riviera Maya are great places to come and enjoy time with your loved ones.

February 22-26 - OHL Classic at Mayakoba

Mexico's only PGA Tour event; come watch some of the best golfers in the world hit the links in the Riviera Maya at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba at the El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba. 

February 24 - Flag Day/Dí­a de la Bandera

Come to the Cancun area and join the locals to celebrate their flag on this national holiday.

End of February Carnaval Nightly parades and live music in the main town square. Lasts about 

End of February / Beginning of March - Carnaval

Celebrate Carnaval in Playa del Carmen with a parade for five nights down the famous 5th Ave.  The dates of the event vary by year, so check before you plan to visit, but be sure to come down, as it is one of the areas best events.



1st Wednesday of March

Ash Wednesday 1st day of Lent, you will see many people with crosses on their forehead.

March 20 - Spring Equinox

You may want to head to Chichen Itza on this day. During the spring equinox, the angle of the setting sun causes a serpent shadow to appear on the Kukulkan pyramid.

March 21 - Benito Juarez Birthday  

Thought to be one of Mexico's greatest presidents ever, with an amazing personal story, this day commemorates the life of Benito Juarez.



April 1-8 - Semana Santa / Easter Week

Holy Week, holy celebration!  This is probably Mexico's biggest holiday event celebrating the end of lent and Easter. Mexican's from all over Mexico take holiday and get together to celebrate.  The bars, streets and beachs of Cancun and Playa del Carmen will be full of nationals enjoying an fun in the sun holiday.

April 30 - Dia del Niño 

This day celebrate the children.  It is like every child in Mexico has the same birthday - with parties, parades and family gatherings, it is a great time to show the kids how special they are.



May 1 Labor Day 

A Mexican holiday that celebrates the economic and social contributions of the workforce in throughout Mexico.

May 5 - Cinco de Mayo - Battle of Puebla

Often misunderstood as an Independence Day, which it is not, this famous Mexico holiday celebrates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Army at Puebla in 1862.

May 10 - Mother's Day

Family is such a significant part of Mexico's culture, and this day celebrates the queen, Mom, so it is a very important holiday.  It is also a great reason to bring your Mom to Cancun or Playa del Carmen for all she has done for you!

Mid - May - Cancún International Gay Festival

Cancun comes alive as the gay and lesbian communities from around the world.  With special events all over the area, it is a fun event.

May 28 - Fishing Tournament in Puerto Morelos

Taking place at one of the best times of year for fishing in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, this tournament includes events for Sailfish, Dorado/Mahi Mahi,, Marlin, Bonito and more - ever the toothy but tasty Barracuda.


June 1 - Navy Day 

This National Holiday honors the men and women of the Mexican Navy and its rich history

Third Sunday in June - Father's Day

Like Father's Days around the world, Mexico's Father's Day is an important celebration where families honor their fahthers and show their love and appreciation.  It is a great time to take your father down to Cancun and the Riviera Maya for some fishing and golf.

Late June - Summer Solstice

With intimate knowledge of celestial systems, the summer solstice was an important date for the Mayan along the Riviera Maya.  Come welcome the longest day of the year at a Mayan celebration at the local Mayan ruins. 



July - Mayan New Year

Ok, so the world did not end in 2012 as some thought based on what many thought from a Mayan calendar.  That is good, because now you can come to Cancun to celebrate the start of the Mayan calendar for years to come.

Mid July - Fiesta of the Virgin of Carmen

Playa del Carmen comes alive with this national celebration of the Virgin of Carmen.  Enjoy festivals, cultural events, parties and fun costumes all over town.



August 11-12-13 - Fiesta de la Playa en Cancun 

With some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, it is no wonder that Cancun takes the time to celebrate them.  Come take part in parties and beach activities right on the stunning beaches of Cancun.


August 17- Isla Mujeres Founding Day  

With our without celebrations, Isla Mujeras is an amazing place.  But add a festival to the mix and it is difficult to think of a better place to be.  Come enjoy festive celebrations, music, dancing and parades on this beautiful island paradise.



 September 7-9 Latin American Food Show

Latin America's most important food and drink event. Countries from all over Latin America come to participate in this event and display food and beverages of their nation.  Foodies from around the world gather to taste and take food business.

 September 15 - El Grito

Take part in the traditional midnight scream or cry, "grito" in Spanish, for the independence of Mexico the night before Mexico's Independence Day

 September 16 - Mexican Independence Day

Mexican flags are everywhere and town plazas are packed as Mexicans celebrate their National Independence from Spain in 1810 with parades, festivals, feasts, parties and more.

 September 22- Autumn Equinox  

With a thorough understanding of the solar system and seasonal cycles, this celestial event was a very special day for the Mayans.  Visit a Mayan ruins for a recreation of a ancient Mayan ritual celebrating this event.



Mid - October - Dia de la Raza

Mexico's Columbus Day recognizes the Spanish history of Mexico.  With street parties, parties with bands and dancing, street processions and even bullfights this is a fun event to be a part of. 

October 31 - Halloween 

Primarily a USA and Canadian holiday, Halloween is growing in popularity in Mexico.  But in Cancun and Playa del Carman, where you will find many Americans and Canadians, it is a lively party.  Don't forget your costume!



November 1 - Dia de Todos Santos, Dia de Muertos- All Saints Day 

This very uniquely Mexican holiday celebrates the departed souls of deceased family and friends.  People visit cemeteries to enjoy time with the departed and bring them their favorite food, drinks and treats and leaving them at their alters.  With famous art that has become pop culture, this is and amazing time to visit Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

November 20 - Anniversary of Mexican Revolution

Thought to be the most important sociopolitical event in Mexico, the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917 was an uprising against and autocratic government that lasted for almost 10 years. Festive parades in Cancin and Playa del Carman celebrate this event.

November 20 - Taste of Playa   

This event gives the best chefs from throughout the Riviera Maya a chance to show their creativity and passion for cooking.  Held in the heart of Playa del Carmen at 5th Avenue and Juarez your taste buds don't want to miss this event.

November 24-26 - Riviera Maya Jazz Festival

Jazz in the sand!  Relax and enjoy some amazing music at this free event at Mamitas Beach.


December 12 - Day of the Virgen of Guadelupe

This is a religious holiday that celebrated the Virgin of Guadelupe. You may see processions along the highways in honor.

December 16 - 24 Posadas 

Christmas party time!  These parties are an important event for families, businesses and communities to celebrate the holiday season.

December 28 - Day of the Innocents

Mexico's "April Fools Day."  People turn into jokers and spend the day pulling playful tricks on each other.

December 31 - New Year's Eve

A great time to be in Cancun and Playa del Carmen!  With parties on every corner, ring in the new year in the warm nights and with people from around the world.  Take part in Mexican celebrations, like the eating grapes and making wishes or eating the sweet bread and finding the hidden coin for good luck.
